So. In P&P (the BBC/A&E miniseries), it is not explained how Lady Catherine (and Mr. Collins, who writes to Mr. Bennet about it) finds out about Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth. I have not read the book (though it is on my list — do not shun me!) and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Austen explains it there. Thanks in advance.

(Yes, I rewatched disc 1. I blame [livejournal.com profile] trexphile. :) )

ETA: OMG, I can't believe I misspelled "prejudice". ::runs away in horror::

Austen has Lizzie suppose it is the 'gossiping Lucases' who tell Charlotte and thus, her husband, that Bingley and Jane's marriage must lead to another in the family....and, outside the book, I'm not sure how much Charlotte shared her original suspicions with her family, that Darcy admired Lizzie greatly...

Thanks... it just seemed so out of the blue. Lizzie (as far as I can recollect) didn't tell anyone, and I couldn't imagine the information flow going from Collins to Lady Catherine. I was left to theorize that Darcy himself said something to, say, Col. Fitzwilliam, with the intent of getting the proverbial ball rolling ;)

Hee, I'm such a bad influence!

I'm currently rereading P&P and have only gotten as far as Mr Collins's arrival. It's been many years since I've read it, so I have no idea, but thankfully you were able to get your question answered ;)

Oh, another JA fan? I need more friends like this! All the P&P people I know are too old and square (stop me from going into a rant about a certain Jane Austen board). I had to explain what "emo" was today. I felt so ... out of place. So young. But in a bad way.

Um... what does "emo" mean, exactly?

(...practically ancient at 35)

God I'm tired. I moved this weekend and I haven't had sleep for like four days now. Stupid summer school.

Go sleep. :)

(I meant I was kidding about defining 'emo'... I've figured it out just by context.)

Ooh ooh ooh, I know about this! Yey!

Lady C didn't know about Darcy's proposal, nor did anybody but Darcy, Lizzie, and Jane. It's like [livejournal.com profile] barbara_the_w said otherwise ... It's probably all Charlotte's fault. In the book Mr. Collins spills the beans that Charlotte was criticizing the Bennet family for Lydia's elopement (can you blame her?) Also, her dad (Sir William) thought that Darcy and Lizzie were "cute together," and Charlotte had theorized that Darcy was in love with Elizabeth long before. So, yeah, blame the Lucases. Also, Lady C is a major asshat. And I need to finish the second part of the recap. I had lots of fun with rewriting Darcy's letter in drunken Valley Girl-talk.

I had a feeling you'd pitch in. Thanks for confirming -- not that I didn't believe my dear [livejournal.com profile] barbara_the_w. :)

While watching last night, I could not stop thinking "Col Forester's Child Bride"! "The Parlour of Marital Discontent" (discontent?)!

Must post the drunken Valley Girl letter. MUST. MUST. MUST.
