After something like 23 (!) years of knowing each other, something incredible is in the works for this month: I am actually going to meet [personal profile] brinshannara live and in person! She is coming to town for a work thing and this is really going to happen, omgomgomg.

I should have moved here years ago, but didn't. Now seems a good time to do that:

I'll still read the friendslists on LJ and probably comment, and I'll keep the journal there until I can archive it.

Aw snap!

I missed it--damn and blast! But it's been here for ten years. Wow.

Good Show Sir: Only the worst Sci-fi/Fantasy book covers.

Appalling. Hilarious. Appallingly hilarious.

I am thankful for all that I have. ♥ (I don't post much here these days, but I do read.) Much love and hugs to you all!

PLEASE do not use the newly rolled out 'feature' to Facebook- and Twitter-connect comments on any of my posts. Thank you!

If you use Firefox and Greasemonkey, you can install DisConnect to prevent the options from appearing on your posts or comments so you don't accidentally click on it.

If you want to verify that you are not cross-linked to FB/Twitter, or you no longer want to be, go here.

Also, pingbacks are back, and appear to be "Open" by default, not "Disabled". Check your settings for this here.

Shoot me if I ever decide to do one of these again that spans A MONTH.

Day 29 - Current TV show obsession

I don't really have one, actually. If you can believe it. I'm trying to get caught up on all of the episodes of Medium and Psych that I've missed, but I'm not obsessed with either. I only just watched episode one of Sherlock from the BBC, so that's not rightly an obsession yet. =)

Day 30 - Saddest character death

I have to say the first one that sprang to mind was Capt. Sheridan from Babylon 5, not because of his actual death (which, if memory serves, was not on-screen), but for the heart-wrenching scene to follow with Delenn. Thinking of that now still makes me feel a bit emotional.

Day 28 - First TV show obsession

That would probably have to be Charlie's Angels. My sister, my cousin Jen and I would play together as the angels, running around her house and backyard. I don't remember who Jen was or who I was, but I do remember we always made my sister play Sabrina (Kate Jackson) because we thought she [Sabrina] was the 'ugly one' (*is shamed*). We had and played with the dolls, too, though it was a bit disappointing that they were off-scale from Barbie and her ilk.

Home stretch, peeps!

Day 26 - OMG WTF? Season finale

Sticking to a show I actually watched, not St Elsewhere (which was the WTFiest WTF series finale EVER).

Lost is the clear choice here. The season finale of season 1, with the light coming up out of the hatch, OMG. And the series finale... while I was generally pleased with the final episode of Lost (oh, Jack.), I have to say the whole 'sideways' universe thing made me scratch my head and say precisely that.

Day 27 - Best pilot episode

I already covered this in one of the previous days, I think, but: Lost. I can't remember when a show had me hooked so quickly, like, within the first seven minutes quickly.

Maybe True Blood, come to think of it.
peppermintesse: (Cosplay in the park)
So… close… almost… done…

Day 25 - A show you plan on watching (old or new)

Battlestar Galactica and the new Dr Who. I think I saw one episode of the former, and a few of the Christopher Eccleston (Ninth Doctor), but I'd really like to be more well-versed with my nerdy friends in conversation(not that I don't want to see the shows in their own right). When there's a bit more flexibility with money, I think a Netflix account is in order.
peppermintesse: (NCIS Abby)
Day 23 - Most annoying character

This is tough, because I don't tend to stick with shows if there's a character I find too annoying. Even the ones I can think of off the top of my head (Joxer on Xena, Michael Scott on The Office) have some redeeming qualities.

Maybe any one of those obnoxious younger siblings on a variety of 80s sitcoms…? Joey Lawrence comes to mind.

Day 24 - Best quote

"If there's nothing wrong with me, there must be something wrong with the universe."
-- Beverly Crusher, "Remember Me", TNG

This has been interesting, but I will NEVER do a 30 day meme again.

Day 22 - Favourite series finale

Off the top of my head:

TNG. That episode was the epitome of everything that was great about that show. I got so teary at the end. It was epic, certainly better than any of the big-screen offerings, in my opinion.

I remember being very excited about the Cheers finale once upon a time, but cannot for the life of me remember what happened.

The last episode of Journeyman--which ended far too soon with what was likely not intended on being a series finale ;_;--sort of brought things full circle, but so much was still unanswered.

I wish I could include Xena (WTF, Rob Tapert? WTF?) and Lost (was okay, satisfying enough ending, but so much left unanswered; the epilogue helped a lot) on this list.
peppermintesse: (Darcy)
Day 21 - Favourite ship

I believe the phrase they're looking for is "'ship", as in relationship, unless they want me to name the favourite boat I've ever seen on TV. (Which I'd have to say? The Love Boat.)

Without question it had to be Dr. Crusher and Captain Picard on TNG. Confession time, not like this is a big secret, but I have always had a thing for the sort of male character who's cool under pressure, smart as a whip, stoic and taciturn, but when his defenses are down and he lets someone in, it's revealed that there's so much more churning beneath the surface than one can possibly imagine (preferably there's an accent involved). It's probably a good thing I never read Pride & Prejudice as a pre-teen because I would have been hopelessly in love with the character of Mr. Darcy. As this was not the case, I settled for the odd soap opera character (Robert Scorpio comes to mind), then along came the Captain, who embodies all of these things, and would not be dethroned for many a year ;)

Beverly Crusher was his equal in every way, yet was as fiery and outwardly passionate as he was not; while she learned to rein in her wayward tongue she was far more garrulous, more social and extroverted, than he ever was. (And she dances.) Add in the angst and strife of their shared history (guilt over the death of her husband Jack, who died under Picard's watch), at odds with their obvious physical attraction, which faded into a comfortable (or not so comfortable) friendship by the end of the series, at which time things seemed to be on track... or were they? Because future events seemed to indicate there might, might, be a schism, a divorce... but the future was also elastic! Argh.

Oh yes, we were teased and taunted... and now I like to think, like [livejournal.com profile] brinshannara, that in post-movie canon, they're happily holed up in LaBarre, France. ♥

Honourable mention: Xena and Gabrielle; Pam and Jim (The Office, especially season 2); Joe and Allison (Medium). Don't currently have any big TV 'ships going at the moment that I can think of. Maybe Hoyt and Jessica from True Blood? I'm really rooting for those crazy kids to get back together.

(This is a lot wordier than I was expecting!)
peppermintesse: (Darcy)
Whoops, I didn't even realize I missed a day.

Day 20 - Favourite kiss

There was the kiss in the finale of TNG, Dr. Crusher & Picard (am totally swiping this from [livejournal.com profile] brinshannara: Embedded video behind the cut. )

(Is it totally lame of me to say that I really kind of liked the first Ross and Rachel kiss on Friends?)

My absolute favourite kiss on any screen, however, is from a movie, which unbelievably I cannot find in a decent format on the Tubes of You. *pause* Oooh. This is the end of Bridget Jones' Diary the sequence where Mark returns after she thinks he's gone to NYC... and while the whole sequence is pretty good, about 4:17 is where the lead up to the kiss is, the famous "Nice boys don't kiss like that..." line, and its follow-up.

Day 19 - Best TV show cast

It is not possible to pick only one.

I actually thought the Friends cast was a pretty good ensemble cast. Crossing Jordan was good as well; so were Firefly and Babylon 5. And we mustn't forget TNG.

Really fond of The Big Bang Theory, NCIS and How I Met Your Mother.
peppermintesse: (Happy Mac)
Day 18 - Favourite title sequence

Oh, gosh. TNG's sequence was always wonderful and spacey... I really liked Journeyman's and Murder One, mostly because I liked the music. And Pride & Prejudice's opening (the mini), with the embroidery and the beautiful piano music...

My current favourite though is the opening to The IT Crowd. Because everything's better in 8-bit! It's particularly amusing watching it full-screen on the computer, given the way the sequence ends. Bonus video: Moss rebooting. Ahahahahahaha.

I can also tell you which title sequence I don't care for: True Blood. LOVE the theme song and the way the sexier scenes are show, but I don't like the decaying animals scenes one bit. I know it's all part of the theme of the circle of life and death (germane to the show) but I still don't want to watch it over dinner.
peppermintesse: (Darcy)
Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show

Anything true-crime related: 48 Hours, Dateline, anything on A&E or Discovery (when we had cable) about mystery, forensics, murder and chaos.

Day 17 - Favourite mini series

No-brainer: A&E / BBC's Pride & Prejudice (1996). If I have to explain this to you, then... well. Perhaps there is no hope for you ;) In all seriousness, it is an amazing adaptation, and the one by which all future adaptations (read: Mr Darcy ;) ) are and will be compared.
peppermintesse: (Pensive B.)
Day 15 - Favourite female character

This one, I think, is much harder than male, mostly because while I very much liked the characters of Dr. Crusher, Dana Scully, and so on, I can't honestly say I feel that fangirly 'oh yes, this is absolutely the best female character I have ever seen on TV' feeling.

Obviously I quite adore Dr. Crusher from TNG, and she probably comes the closest in terms of the character I liked the best for the longest amount of time. Her backstory was so incredibly interesting--falling in love with a man whose superior officer was secretly in love with her, I mean, how Greek Tragedy is that?--and it was so disappointing when they failed to flesh that out. Unfortunately she suffered from being a stereotypical female character in science fiction shows before a certain time: the nurturer/carer. This isn't so much the case anymore, because too many people have just plain noticed. (Troi was the same--the counselor, FFS--and the other predominant female on TNG, Tasha Yar, who is head of security and not a nurturer... well, she got killed by a lava monster in a fairly otherwise unremarkable episode. I know that had more to do with Denise Crosby wanting to leave the show, but...).

Maybe I'm just overthinking things.
