So on the USA network last night, I finally managed to catch the episode of "NCIS" in which Kate... departs, shall we say. And just at the crucial moment at the end is about to happen, the stupid DVR throws up an alert that fills the screen, because two things were about to record at once and did I want to change the channel when that happens?

I jumped up from my office chair and dashed to the remote but by the time I clicked OK and the screen disappeared, the episode was over. ARGH!

So... I technically still haven't seen that happen. I suppose it might be available on YouTube, but haven't had a chance to go and look.

And because this is too funny not to share everywhere: Austenbook, in which the story of Pride & Prejudice is told through the Facebook news feed (only in chronological order, making it easier to read). HILARIOUS.

Heads up

Tonight at 9pm Pacific time, PBS kicks off Jane Austen-o-mania with a new production of Persuasion and continues each Sunday for the foreseeable future with other Austen productions, including the (in)famous 1995 BBC Pride & Prejudice, until the entire Austen repertoire is complete.

1.) I am using Handbrake as we speak to zap "Pride & Prejudice" (1995) into iPod-able MP4 files. Since I opt for 2 pass encoding, it takes longer to pull the chapters from each disc than it does to play it. (I am a sad human being.)

2.) This catalog has a "Pride & Prejudice" board game. I am amused and also am speechless for reasons I can't quite explain.

Sorted through the books in the living room. Cannot find the shelves that go to the smaller bookcases, but have located mystery shelves that (we think) belong to a bookcase we no longer own. Urgh. So there are still piles of books on the floor, but they are all sorted (except the paperbacks), and a good portion are shelved.

Watched Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Was amused to realize the vice president was played by the same actress who played Caroline Bingley (who, apparently, is a great-niece eight times over of Jane Austen's) in the P&P mini. I recognized the divet in her chin.

I'm annoyed. They took off all of the things I like to watch on Adult Swim on Saturday night. Why do they show all the good stuff on Sunday night? Why? WHY?

Hee.

Just had a P&P marathon with [livejournal.com profile] janabard. And a grand time was had by both of us. :)

Finished!

Read 2/3rds of "Pride & Prejudice" this afternoon. My only complaint had nothing to do with the book itself but the reading environment (it is too damned hot). :) Finishing it makes me want to watch the BBC mini again. I am so sad.

Thanks for the offer of the book loaner, [livejournal.com profile] barbara_the_w, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] redcoast for reminding me it was online. I just do better reading stuff like this on paper.

Tired

Been reading Austen, "Pride & Prejudice". And I'm enjoying it, but I'm finding that I like Austen like I like Shakespeare: performed. With both, I'm finding that I can understand the context of the language better with tone of voice and facial expressions.

Had a rather decent holiday. BBQ with friends, blowing up little firecrackers on the back porch, live hose at the ready. Drank my very last Okanagan cider (::cries::), as well as some raspberry lambic ale.

Was just feeling better when the cough returned today. Yuck.

Question.

Is it necessary to put spoiler tags for Pride & Prejudice? Well, just in case I will. There is something I'm curious about. ) Thanks in advance.

(Yes, I rewatched disc 1. I blame [livejournal.com profile] trexphile. :) )

ETA: OMG, I can't believe I misspelled "prejudice". ::runs away in horror::
peppermintesse: (Party on!)
Private amusement of the day: so I stop into Papa Murphy's to pick up dinner and it's packed in there with the Friday night dinner crowd. (We always phone it in ahead though.) I am zoned out tired from lack of sleep but my ears immediately perk up when I hear the words "Pride & Prejudice" and "Ohhhh, that Mr Darcy!" When I get to the front of the line I ask the girl behind the counter which version she was talking about, and she meandered on about how she had just seen the 2005 movie and would definitely not had liked it as much if she hadn't previously seen the 1995 miniseries, that she wouldn't have understood what was going on. So I'm postulating she meant the 1995 one was the one she was going all gooey over. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

BTW, the last time I was in there, "Evil Woman" by ELO was playing. (After I made that post.)

Also, randomly, we went for a walk yesterday and right there crossing in front of us, rolling down 12th Avenue, was a Segway. First time I'd ever seen one in person, and there it was in the middle of our quiet neighbourhood.

Also also, my cat Rowan just swatted a yellowjacket out of the air, which I subsequently smacked with my Birk.

Bleh!

Yesterday was nice and lazy. I don't want to go back to work. :P Maybe it'll be slow and I'll get to work on paperwork-ordering again.

Watched the 2005 Pride & Prejudice last night. Kinda meh about it. Kiera Knightley was okay (though how this was Oscar-nomination-worthy, I can't guess), but Matthew Macfayden? Not nearly broody or smouldery enough. (Yes, I realize I'm awfully biased.) He also reminds me of someone I used to know so that makes it worse for him. I was mostly impressed with the way things were compressed into a 2 hour movie. Oh, and I felt like I should have put the captioning on, because I had a hard time hearing the dialogue over the music. (Was it mixed in Doubly? ;) )

Off to make lunch for later.
peppermintesse: (Introverted)
Went to leave the house and found a note tacked to the door to advise of a late fee because we turned the rent in on the 5th and not the 4th. Then, went to Hollywood Video to rent the 2005 Pride & Prejudice to find outstanding late charges from when The Truman Show was a new release.

Just saw an ad on TV featuring "Solsbury Hill", and I realized the only song I had in iTunes by Mr. Gabriel was "Sledgehammer". How did I get to today and only have one Peter Gabriel song in my iTunes library? I am remedying this as we speak. Well, at least it's trying -- it's been working on "Big Time" for a few minutes now. If this means my SuperDrive is finally dying, I'm gonna scream. (Cursed MR.)
peppermintesse: (Darcy)
I was nearly overcome by giggles at the bus stop this afternoon. See, I've been reading Darcy & Elizabeth: Nights and Days at Pemberley. And then "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails came on my iPod. And. Well. I got the silliest notion that if I had the time, ability, and software, I might put together a fan vid to this song using footage from the P&P miniseries, of Darcy giving Elizabeth The Eye™. Really, I had to restrain a laugh lest the others at the stop think me utterly crazed...

On a tangent: I'm still interested in changing layouts to the one that allows a list of Entry Tags (I think it's called "Smooth Sailing"...?) but I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out the customizable colours. I mean, there are so many options to choose from, and I can't figure out until I save then load which colour goes to which graphic element. Is there a guide to this that I'm missing, or some presets I didn't see?

Squee!

I was in Borders, wielding a dangerous 25% off coupon, when I spotted Linda Berdoll's sequel to Mr Darcy Takes a Wife. I didn't think it was due out until MAY! So... whee!!!

Fantastically good day thus far, all around. Much accomplished, including laundry, washing out the kitty water fountain (note to self: must wash out more frequently). About to settle in with a slightly-earlier-than-usual dinner and Jon Stewart, er, I mean the Oscars...

An hilarious recap of the 1995 BBC Pride & Prejudice here. Favourite quote:

"Bingley and Jane dance. Bingley smiles at Darcy, standing on the sidelines. Darcy smiles indulgently back and rolls his eyes. Well, I say he smiles back, but you must understand that Colin Firth, as Darcy, never actually moves any facial muscles. It's as if Colin Firth was like, 'Hmm, I wonder if I can go the entire mini-series without ever changing my facial expression. At all.' For some reason, though, every emotion clearly shows through. It's very strange. He has the most expressive unexpressive face I've ever seen."

ETA: Darn, it's only part 1, not the whole miniseries!
ETA2: Here are all the parts. Hoorah!

ETA3: Another excellent laugh-out-loud quote, from Part 3:

"Humble Abode, The Parlor of Marital Discontent. Colonel Fitzwilliam is played by a very lucky young man, because he, despite the stiff competition offered by Wickham, Denny, Darcy, and various others, has been awarded the Bridget Jones Award for Man Who Most Needs to Rethink the Length of His Sideburns. Mutton-chops, I tell you, mutton-chops!"

ETA4: Inspired by above: had to created new icon. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] redcoast. :)
peppermintesse: (Mr. Firth)
Yes, both BJD-related. Sue me.

1.) OMG, it's Mr Bingley! )

2.) I realized today that in a clever "Shawn from Wallace & Gromit: A Close Shave" sort of way that in an English accent, "Mark" almost sounds like "Mock". No idea if that was done on purpose. Har har har. ETA: as in "Mock Darcy". As in false Mr Darcy. *crickets chirp* Well, I was amused, anyway.

Dreamt last night of a quest for a Narnia-like portal in a big ramshackle house, then a counter full of dishes to wash (and feeling depressed because I'd just washed the damn dishes). This after filling my head all day with tales of adventure and romance from Mr Darcy Takes a Wife (which I am finding definitely has more than one meaning, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more). I mean, really. DISHES??? Feh. :P
peppermintesse: (sotw)
Just for the record, Mr Darcy Takes a Wife by Linda Berdoll is an absolutely delightful read and I have only made it to page 25 so far. The hold at the library came through and I decided I was just too anxious to read this one and will rely on my recent viewing of the miniseries to sustain me, character- and story-wise (I will return to Pride & Prejudice, which was checked out, in the near future).

I especially liked the preface. :)

Heee!

My Amazon order shipped today! OK, so it's USPS, but even with Super Saver shipping it usually doesn't take very long to get stuff from them.

Hm. I need new icons. How is it that a supposed creative professional can have such unoriginal icons??? Feh. ::steals about half of [livejournal.com profile] moireach's icons and half of [livejournal.com profile] jidabug's::
