It's a personal preference. I try to do low-carb: no sugar/starch. My dad had Type 2 Diabetes (well, I suppose he still does, but after he lost a ton of weight he doesn't have to really monitor himself any more) and I don't really want it.
On a related note, I was at Target buying sugar-free candy (Dove! Dark Chocolate! With raspberry!) for the movie the other day. The cashier commented, "Oh, I always go to the dollar store and get Charleston Chew" (or something similar). I said, "I don't do sugar." She replied, "Oh, neither do I. I have diabetes. I get them for my kids." I was literally without words.
