Day 11 - A show that disappointed you

I tried watching one of those dance competition shows, and I was completely disappointed in the chatter and babbling and drama compared to actual, you know, dancing.

I know there have been others but the disappointment usually means I blank it from memory.

You said something like this while commenting somewhere else, and I thought you said then that the show was So You Think You Can Dance. Which I was surprised about because that's probably the only competition show I can watch BECAUSE of the quality of the dancing and the minimal bullshit. The judges are actually really dancers and/or choreographers, so they're not just washed-up celebrities stating their opinions. And that means, of course, that they actually judge. The audience does call in votes, but the judges make the final boot-off decision.

The host is cheesy as hell, and the audience screams too much, but I'm amazed every week by the high quality of the performances and the choreography. I'm thinking that SYTYCD is one of the least popular competition/reality shows, and it's probably because it doesn't have all that other bullshit. Pity, really, 'cause it deserves more recognition.

Mm, you know, the more I think about it, the more I think it was Dancing With The Stars. That's good to know about SYTYCD, because it did seem interesting, and I was avoiding it for the reasons given above. :D

There was also some kind of international competition one we watched from all over the world which was cool--and we got to play it on DVR when we had it and skipped through all the crap. Got through it in, I swear, half the time.

If you decide to give SYTYCD a try, I'd like to hear what you think about it. And if you don't like it, you can say so -- it wouldn't hurt my feelings if you didn't like it ;)

That's how I watch it -- prerecorded on the DVR. I skip through most of the non-dancing that way.

Same here... exactly. There is still some silly TV stuff, but they are actually serious about dance and choreography, and willing to go out on some limbs artistically. Whereas Dancing w/ the Star always looks hideously cheesy to me by comparison (in the previews or the few minutes Iwhile waiting for another show).

My favorite part is the early auditions and group choreography, the rawness and variety, the intensity of the emotions. I always wish they'd do more of that, less of the results shows which tend to have too much puffery of not much content.

I agree about the results shows. Which is why I DVR everything first, then watch. I FF through the results show pretty fast and only watch the actual results ;)

I actually didn't watch the show for the past couple of years and only got back into it after all the auditions after my brother, aggravated because I stopped watching Glee, told me that we needed to have at least one show in common ;) I'm glad I started watching again.
